Before all else…

To figure out what rem could really do, we will be looking into the anime, manga, and novels for re:zero, we’ll also be looking into some author statements for re:zero as well just in case if there’s anything interesting we can give rem here. Though if we missed out on anything or got anything wrong we’ll make sure to fix some things Also there’s a possibility of spoilers so don’t read if you wish to avoid something like that, and no crossover scaling that’s pretty obvious. But for now let’s get into this.




Background


In a fantasy world like re:zero, you could probably imagine a lot of things being in this world such as dragons, demi-humans, half elves, swordsmen, knights etc. But among these beings, was a race of demi-humans all of which formed a clan, the mightiest one of all, the demon clan. Though one night under a blood-red moon, two twins were born into the world, one with pink hair and one with blue hair, and they were sought to be killed as twins were seen as a taboo, but to the surprise of the demon clan, one of the twins possessed great magical power with only one horn and they saw her as a prodigy… Except for one of the demons, the younger twin sister known as rem. 



Rem was born into this world not as talented as her older sister, although she tried her best she could never match her in magical power. Regardless she would always do her best to try and keep up with her sister but no matter what she did she would always fall behind, even having nightmares of people saying that it would’ve been best if she had perished and only her sister ram lived instead. Even still, she still had her sister in the end and that’s all she really needed to keep going, until one day tragedy struck as soon she would find that everything in her village had gone up in flames with everybody she ever knew and loved dead and burning. All because of a group known as the witch cult, luckily she was saved by her sister as she managed to tear apart many of the cultists one by one, unfortunately while ram wasn’t looking, one of the cultists snuck up on her and struck her horn, breaking it completely off her head, and rem was not able to do anything about it.



They were eventually saved though, as a man known as Roswaal L. Mathers found the two twins and decided to take them both back to his manor where they’ll be working as maids. While it wasn’t easy working at first, rem did better… Though only because she had to imitate what her sister can do, if she can’t even do that then she was completely useless, she saw herself as nothing more than a mediocre replacement, she was inferior to her in every way, as she and ram worked hard and did their very best, there was one day where the royal selection candidate who lived at the mansion as well brought along a strange boy who had saved her and got her insignia back, and that boy’s name was subaru natsuki, but what they don’t know about him is that every time that he died he would go back in time and start over, and during one of these loops a lot of things would happen between Subaru and the two twins, such as him working as a butler failing to do simple things such as cooking, cleaning, everything. Though what Subaru didn’t know was that there was more to these maids than he thought and what he didn’t know was how suspicious they are of him. There were even times during one of the loops, rem would end up killing subaru two times all because he has the scent, the same scent that came from the witch cultists that attacked her home, but surprisingly despite what happened to them, Subaru still believed there was good in their heart and desperately made an attempt to save rem and her sister, an attempt in which he succeeded.



With the help, Subaru managed to take down a horde of mabeast that were trying to attack the village and the children there and when everyone was finally saved including rem who Subaru had saved when he was dealing with the mabeast and their leader, he made a plan to buy rem and ram enough time to run away while subaru took the beasts head on even when he had no shot of winning, though he was saved by roswaal who destroyed many of the remaining mabeast with a magical attack, removing the curse that was placed upon the village for good. And when everyone returned to the manor, rem and subaru had a talk, while she believed she was nothing more than a replacement for her sister, Subaru saw her as something more than that, and that she could be her own person, and so he made a promise, that she and him will laugh while talking about the future, and rem, she would fall in love with him, she saw him as her hero, she saw him as fanatical as a demon.



Though as days passed a lot would happen, like the day when the royal selection would happen and rem would end up staying with subaru so he could get his gate healed and restored, however subaru persisted on coming along with emilia during the royal selection, being paranoid of her safety he would go after her and he would make pretty big mistakes, such as talking against the council for disrespecting Emilia, fighting and getting beaten down by a knight known as Julius, and causing a massive drift between him and Emilia, though rem did all she can to comfort him while he remained away, despite what happens whether she died protecting subaru, or even getting full on erased by the white whale, no matter the loop rem stuck with subaru, even though he did not believe in himself and that he hated himself, she would counter those things and tell him of the absolutely wonderful things she knows and loves about him, and she reminded him that he is special and that she would always believe in him, even if he can’t forgive himself they would start from square one… no… they’ll start from zero! 



Though subaru still had feelings for emilia, he would depend on rem to make sure that future where everyone is smiling will happen, and just like that she would help subaru in his mission to save emilia and the others, even facing off against the terrible beast that had erased her during the previous loops that beast known as the white whale, she and subaru succeeded in taking down the beast and in the end, Rem could no longer fight right by Subaru's side as she used up a lot of her mana, but Subaru made a promise that he’ll keep rem at his side for now on. Though it would not last for long for when her and another royal selection candidate crusch got attacked by two new cultists and she ended up losing all of her memories including her name by a sin archbishop of gluttony, forever putting her in an eternal sleep that she can never wake up, though soon, subaru would swore that he will get rem back, no matter what.



Skill & Experience

Rem may be a maid but she’s far from it, she’s a demon who is a remarkable fighter, capable of handling groups of ulgarm and a couple of witch cultists who are skilled in their own right and has fought against the sin archbishop of gluttony lye batenkaitos for a short time and he has knowledge of every technique, training, and fighting styles from the people he eats. She’s also smart enough to build traps to catch rabbits, and is very skilled at cooking and laundry (Though not very useful in combat). She’s also shown to be more skilled than the people in her verse like Al who can dodge attacks with instinct, or even Emilia who while untrained can dodge a rain of arrows by reading the shooter's intent. She’s also very skilled with her flail and can use it skillfully in battle.



Equipment


Morningstar


Her signature weapon morningstar is a flail with a spiked ball at the end of the chain, it may not seem much but with this weapon she is an absolute juggernaut, with it she can tear apart a person’s limb with just a swing or even crush their heads, she can also use this to take out groups of enemies and smash them apart, break apart rock, and can be used to wrap around opponents and pull them close to her. It’s also really great for smashing watermelons :)



Abilities


Demon Physiology

As a demon, she herself should have many of the abilities her clan possess, like the ability to smell miasma which allow her to catch the scent of anyone she meets, she’s even capable of smelling the scent of the witch on Subaru which no one else can see. This ability is extremely useful as it also lets her smell explosions before they happen. Not only that but demons are also capable of sensing mana allowing her to detect people who can use magic, another thing is that demons have their own 6th sense. Which is basically like spider-man’s spider sense, with this 6th sense rem is able to sense any changes in any forest or mountain she’s in and can alert her of any danger nearby. Being a demon also means she surpasses the physical attributes of a human, like being able to kill mabeasts with her bare hands, or how she can carry heavy things with no trouble. 


Rage State

If her horn is activated during battle she can enter in a rage state also known as her oni form, with her horn she can absorb the mana in the atmosphere increasing her strength, speed, durability, and gives her better regeneration, allowing her to heal damage to her organs and bones in an instant. Though she has to remain in control in this form, if she overexertes herself when using her horn she’ll be battered and it’ll be hard to fight in such a state and if she stays in this form for too long she’ll be unable to tell whether the people around are friend or foe. 




Water Magic

Like many of the other characters in re:zero, she’s also capable of using magic, most notably water magic, with this she can manipulate water to create whirlpools (As seen in the gif above), she’s also capable of utilizing water magic to heal others, and can create barriers to defend against attacks, however if the incoming attack is stronger than the barrier it could break through while causing damage to the user. She’s also been able to put people to sleep with her healing magic as well.



Ice Magic

She’s also capable of utilizing ice magic to her advantage, with this she can send out long range ice attacks like a barrage of ice spikes, create massive pillars of ice, or summon massive icicles to launch at opponents. And by freezing liquid such as blood she can use it to her advantage, like how she was able to break Subaru’s metal restraints by expanding blood around them.



Synesthesia

See Rem has the ability to sense people from far away locations like when her sister Ram was in danger back at Roswaal’s palace when the witches' cultists attacked the place. This ability also allows her to feel the emotions as well, so if her sister feels pain then so does she. Though more importantly is that this also lets her share ram’s burden allowing her to access more of her sister's power.



Resistances

  • Absorption & Deconstruction (Users of the flow method are capable of resisting the white whale’s absorption, mabeasts can absorb all of what they eat by reducing it to mana)

  • Extreme Temperatures (Should be comparable to Ram who can survive being in hot temperatures from Roswaal’s fire magic) 

  • Madness, Mind & Soul Manipulation (Can resist the white whale’s mental contamination which causes damage to the soul and also damages the mind as well as driving people insane)

Overall

Strength




Speed

- Able to move at superhuman speeds

- Moved in tandem with lightning (Mach 83.3)

- Reacted to regulus’s attacks

- Reacted and blocked three throwing knives coming at her 

  • (While it’s pretty debatable to scale rem to regulus strength wise, her being able to react and dodge an attack from him means she could be able to keep up with him in speed)


Durability


  • Survives being stabbed a few times by some of the witches cult

  • Survived a rock landslide

  • Survived having her neck and limbs twisted (Though she unfortunately dies later on) 



Scaling


Subaru Natsuki

With rem being shown to be way superior to subaru when it comes to physical stuff she should be able to scale off of Subaru's many impressive feats

- Beat up a group of thugs

- Carried Beatrice while moving at relativistic speeds (5.3 Megatons Of TNT)

- Moved his whip faster than the speed of sound

- Reacted to a beam of light

- Kept up with beatrice who was also able to react to a beam of light

- Survived getting punched in the face by garfiel

- Survives a mansion ceiling collapsing on top of him.

- Subaru Dies………..A LOT.



Ram

While they have never fought one another and Rem herself has stated that Ram is the older and superior sister over her, this doesn’t stop Rem from scaling to the feats Ram has pulled off.


- Ram attacked roswaal in less than a nanosecond (11.4 C)

- Beat up garfiel while he was in his transformed state

- Is able to contend with wilhelm whose clash with valgren part clouds as a side-effect of their clash (18.9 Megatons Of TNT)


Emilia

While this is pretty debatable if you wanna scale to her fully, however she still pulled of many impressive feats as just a child and considering rem has kept up with foes that emilia has faced during combat and even allies you could argue this scaling, but still while it is debatable, we’ll include it for this analysis anyway




Beatrice

While it may seem strange to compare rem to her, she should be capable of the same magical stuff like she can and has fought foes she’s capable of fighting against such as gluttony and even todd, nevertheless whether you want to argue rem scaling to her or not it’s best if we lay down her feats




Roswaal

While roswaal is shown to be more powerful than both rem and ram, other people that rem compares to (like Beatrice, Ram, even some Misc characters) have injured roswaal by slapping him and rem certainly compares to those people which should give her scaling




Misc Characters

There are a lot of other feats from characters or even some mabeasts that you can certainly scale rem to so let’s list them



The Seven Deadly Sins (Debatable/See The Q&A)

Oh boy… Well its certainly quite debatable to scale rem to the witches of sin, however you could make an argument that she could best one of the witches in strength or even keep up with some of them so you could make some arguments but we’ll dive more into that in the Q&A


Satella can:

- Keep up with reinhard (Reinhard should be equal in speed to his ancestor reid who can casually block 10 jiwalds) (21.8 C)


Echnida Can:


- Survives getting hit in the head by a tree (clearly boundless guys trust)

- Fought against hector who was able to stomp roswaal in their fight

- Her while in omega’s body managed to clear a cloudy sky (26.474 Gigatons Of TNT)


Minerva can:


Typhon Can:


Daphne Can:







Weaknesses

Unfortunately even with her oni bloodline she still has flaws in mind, while she is a very skilled combatant she can make rash decisions if she’s not careful and while she is willing to help those in need, she can tend to do things on her own which leads to her making mistakes. And if she recklessly uses her horn during battle, the recoil would leave her battered. She also requires mana to continue in a fight and if she runs out she would be unable to continue fighting.


Q&A Section


Does Rem actually scale to the seven deadly sins?

Now that you’ve gotten past the scaling section, you’re probably wondering why the witches of sin are here, shouldn’t rem not scale to these people? Well honestly you could argue rem scaling to some of them in power considering rem is more combat oriented than minerva and you could definitely argue scaling to omega considering the people she scales to (Emilia, Beatrice, Roswaal) however she does not compare to the rest at all. Especially satella considering she’s above everybody in the verse except Reinhard who rem does not even come close to in power. So there’s some arguments to be made for the scaling of the other witches like minerva or maybe even echidna she should not be able to scale to any of the other witches


Damn you witch of envy…



Does rem actually scale to any of the characters mentioned?

Short Answer: Yes (Though its still debatable on where you scale the characters)


Long Answer: 

There are a lot of things to be said so let’s break this down, like first things first, didn’t the author tappei she was not too strong but not too weak? Well yes but we don’t really know what he meant by this as it could mean anything, plus subaru himself has been saying he’s weak and yet has done things a weak person should not be capable of like carrying someone while moving at relativistic speeds, or him just straight up punching betelgeuse in the face and even knocked him out of the carriage while he was in a monster-like state. We know that Rem is far stronger and faster than Subaru. Given that in one of Subaru’s deaths Rem was able to actually cut off his leg despite already getting a head start with her being shoved to the ground. Also even if we don’t assume this Rem was already beating the hell out of Betelgeuse’s cult and he would have won but because of using one of his haxs that Rem couldn’t see coming she didn’t win. “Then why can Subaru see his ability and Rem couldn’t?” because of Satella’s curse on Subaru to forever return by death. 


Basically it would go like this. Betelgeuse, while powerful in his own right, would have gotten annihilated if he didn’t use his trump card on Rem, but he was able to pull this off because his cult was fending her off giving him the time he needed to use it. (Rem>Betelgeuse in sheer stats, Betelgeuse>Rem in terms of haxs and prep time). And as we already explained, Subaru can already body Betelguese and even blitz him. You get the idea. 



“But what about the others?” Well most of the characters are either low tiers or mid tiers that Rem shouldn’t have much issue scaling to by either using her rage state or blitzing...but here is where it gets tricky, most of the characters we have listed Rem should easily upscale but that’s where we come face to face with that god forsaken Whale we hate!

Now beating this behemoth of Whale not only required an entire army to even stand a fighting chance against it but soooooo much preparation that if they screwed it all up then they would have all died. Hell in episode 17 Rem is just fully forgotten like she never existed the moment she went after the whale. So does this mean Rem doesn’t scale to the Whale? Well it isn’t a done deal just yet folks. Because not only was Subaru able to take a hit from the whale when it roared at him which again would have killed any ordinary human in an instant and we know Rem is far superior than Subaru. But in the same episode Rem was able to hurt the white whale despite being at a massive disadvantage. Adding on to this, Wilhelm is a character who lost his lover in a similar situation, which Rem should scale to considering they both worked together to defeat the White Whale with the army they had and Wilhelm even killing it outright.


In our opinions, scaling Rem to the White Whale while having issues, the fact there are instances of her actually harming the damn thing to begin and Subaru somehow surviving it in his first encounter means once again it sort of falls right back into the Betelguese situation where without haxs Rem could possibly extreme diff it. Though we do advise using it as a high end for scaling.



Conclusion

  • Low End: Building to Small City Block

  • Mid End: Small City to Mountain to Island

  • High End: Continent to Moon (Shouldn’t scale to)

  • Speed: Mach 83.3 at a low end to 11.4 C at a mid end and 21.8 C at the highest end (she doesn’t scale womp)

  • Stats can increase in her rage state

  • Great Offense and Defenses to abilities like Water Magic allowing her to manipulate water around her and the ability of healing, Ice Magic which could make for really good powerful attacks, Resilient to Absorption, Deconstruction, Soul Manipulation, Mind Manipulation, Madness Manipulation, and Extreme Temperatures 

  • Morningstar is great with cleaning out a horde of enemies in an instant especially in her rage state

  • Really quick on her feet meaning hitting and dodging her is extremely difficult

  • Mana Senses can make locating her enemies much easier

  • Best Maid



Preferred Opponents


Kurapika (Hunter X Hunter)

Kurapika shares a lot of connections with rem, though for me I have not seen much of hunter x hunter so I don’t got too much of an opinion on the match but for those who have seen re:zero and HXH and like this matchup y’all are cool. But still if I do learn more about kurapika then maybe I can give this matchup a shot, though I’ve heard scar from FMA being an opponent for kurapika as well.




Scorpion (Mortal Kombat)

Ninja Vs Maid isn’t something I’d expect in a MU but there’s probably a whole lot weirder matchups, anyways while they don’t have much similarities besides the whole clan being wiped out thing and having chain-like weapons but still it has a lot of potential like rem using water or ice magic against scorpion’s hellfire, you could even have a moment where rem starts to remind scorpion of sub zero after seeing her use ice magic, and it would be interesting to see rem going into her oni form and they just went all out in the netherrealm, overall I don’t think this is a bad match though if others don’t like it then yeah I understand but at least it has some things going for it.



Tohru (Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid) 

Honestly, I never knew this matchup existed, but nevertheless I do not care all that much about the match not because I think rem has better opponents but because I don’t see rem’s arsenal meshing well with tohru’s stuff.



Rose (How not to summon a demon lord)

Again, don’t really care for this matchup either because Rose doesn’t really have much that makes me interested in the match.


N (Murder Drones)

This MU was brought up to me by the person who helped me out with the research for this blog, while I don’t fully understand the connections for this match, the dynamic does sound pretty interesting and it would be interesting to see how they would interact with each other considering one uses magic while the other uses technology and I could see rem’s magic and weapons bouncing off well with N’s arsenal and abilities.
